Vancouver’s target of 100% Renewables by 2050: Just Another Pipe Dream?

September 9, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

$175

We invite you to join us for the upcoming seminar hosted by SFU’s Faculty of Environment, featuring globally recognized economist, Dr. Mark Jaccard, professor of sustainable energy in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University and a member of the Mayor of Vancouver’s Renewable Energy Advisory Panel.

WHO WILL ATTEND AND WHY?

If Vancouver is to become a “vibrant renewable energy community” the collaboration of politicians, civil servants, investors, regulators, developers, academic experts and active citizens is essential. Join civil servants and politicians from Metro Vancouver, provincial and federal governments, green investors, media, academics, representative from utilities and leading non-government organizations to explore the technologies, infrastructure, urban development and financial mechanisms and policies to dramatically shift to a renewable energy path over the next decades.

ABOUT DR. MARK JACCARD AND THE SEMINAR

Drawing from his respected and longstanding expertise and advisory work on clean energy policy at the provincial and federal levels in Canada and other countries, Dr. Jaccard will present some of the key challenges and options for Vancouver’s quest to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050, the target announced last year by the city council. As with all government climate policies, it is important to make sure that wishful thinking biases do not cloud our understanding of what is actually achievable. Dr. Jaccard’s seminar will focus on sustainable urban energy and community energy planning and the specific technologies and policies that will move the city down this road to 100% renewable, inspiring other cities in the Metro Vancouver area to take similar actions.

WHAT CAN BE ACHIEVED BY CITIES WHEN IT COMES TO GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS REDUCTION?

Given your organization’s strong commitment to clean energy and your leadership among business, government and community leaders, I believe you will find this to be a timely, informative and relevant occasion. Mark Jaccard’s September 9th seminar, “Vancouver’s Target of 100% Renewables” will be a significant event in the shift toward a zero carbon economy for those taking climate and clean energy leadership in our region. The morning seminar will be followed by a working lunch.
