VAG offsite opening | Elizabeth Zvonar

Vancouver artist Elizabeth Zvonar conjures romantic sentiment and melancholic undertones in The Experience, a bleached-out collage that boldly positions itself in downtown Vancouver during the dreary winter months. A pair of sunglasses in the foreground of a celestial landscape from Mars reads like a postcard from the future. The eighteen-metre banner is framed by a reflective pool of water and colour. The Experience combines the materials and strategies employed in advertising to create tangential connections between social agency and advertorial entertainment. Zvonar’s ambitious reproduction of a hand-cut collage is presented as part of MashUp: The Birth of Modern Culture, a major group exhibition tracing the history of mashup culture across diverse disciplines, presented at the Vancouver Art Gallery from February to June, 2016.
