Tiny Houses | Are They Feasible in Our Region?

THE BC TINY HOUSE COLLECTIVE INVITES CITY PLANNERS, ENGINEERS AND URBAN DESIGNERS FROM ACROSS METRO VANCOUVER TO SHAPE THE CONVERSATION AROUND TINY HOUSES IN OUR REGION.
Participants will help identify content to include in several feasibility studies on tiny houses from a construction management lens. This could include tiny house design and construction, system needs (servicing) and requirements, and cost and build analyses.
The goal of this event is to connect and facilitate dialogue between these key stakeholders: city planners, engineers, designers, student researchers and community/industry partners. Each student research team will be matched with relevant stakeholders to collaboratively develop a feasibility study on a particular theme related to tiny houses including: greywater management, solar energy, compost toilets and proposed tiny house lots. In the end, these studies will be useful to municipal decision-makers, and practical for both student researchers and their partners.
We also encourage municipalities to bring forward specific plots of land they would like to explore as potential sites for tiny houses as single units (infill or backyard lots) or as pocket villages/communities (multiple units on a lot), from which feasibility studies will be based. These feasibility studies could inform a network of future tiny house pilots across Metro Vancouver, BC and the rest of Canada.
This event is organized by the BC Tiny House Collective in partnership with the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Community Engaged Learning and participating civil engineering 300-level course students (over a three-month term).
