The New Frontiers of Design with Paola Antonelli

April 27, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Wednesday, April 27, 6pm
Talk* / The New Frontiers of Design / Paola Antonelli – Senior Curator at The Museum of Modern Art
Inform Interiors, 50 Water Street, Vancouver, BC

Design has branched out in new directions, galvanizing young practitioners, sparking novel business models, and attracting worldwide attention. A designer today can choose to focus on interaction, interfaces, the web, visualization, socially minded infrastructures, immersive spaces, biodesign, sustainability, video games, critical scenarios, and, yes, even products and furniture. A remarkable thinker on design, Antonelli explores these recent innovations, which draw on past pioneers in the field, in order to expand our understanding of the fundamental role of design in contemporary culture.

About Paola Antonelli: As Senior Curator at The Museum of Modern Art in the Department of Architecture & Design, as well as MoMA’s founding Director of Research & Development Antonelli has curated numerous shows, lectured worldwide, and has served on several international architecture and design juries. She has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles; the Harvard Graduate School of Design; and the MFA programs of the School of Visual Arts in New York. With a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Polytechnic of Milan, Paola Antonelli has also earned Honorary Doctorate degrees from the Royal College of Art and Kingston University, London, and the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. She earned the “Design Mind” Smithsonian Institution’s National Design Award in 2006, and in 2007, was named one of the 25 most incisive design visionaries by Time magazine. In 2011, she was inducted in the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame and in 2015, received the AIGA Medal “for expanding the influence of design in everyday life by sharing fresh and incisive observations and curating provocative exhibitions at MoMA.”
