Aligned Collective is celebrating it’s 1 year anniversary!

We are hosting a special event on the built environment and its impact on happiness, the economy and health.

We will have 3 presentations and a public dialogue with the Happy City* and leading Urban Practitioners.

Mitchell Reardon:
Experiments Lead & Urban Planning and Design Lead for Happy City
Vancouver, Canada

Mitchell’s experiments, projects and research have helped clients achieve high standards in health, wellbeing and sociability in cities around the world, including Vancouver, Wuhan, Mexico City and Stockholm. Mitchell co-founded Metropolitan Collective, a group of tactical urbanists who have transformed unloved and overlooked spaces in Vancouver and beyond. He is also a board member for the Vancouver Public Space Network. Mitchell is a compelling lecturer whose paradigm-shifting keynotes on the link between urban design, sustainable planning and human health have moved audiences in Canada and in Europe.

Mitchell received his Masters of Science in Urban and Regional Planning at Stockholm University in Sweden. His work and insights have been published or broadcast on Next City, CBC News, StarMetro, CBC Radio and more

Mukhtar Latif:
MBA MRICS, CEO and Chief Housing Officer, Pomegranate Housing Consultancy
Vancouver, Canada

Mukhtar has 30 years of international affordable housing and development experience within public, non-profit and private sectors. He excels in building partnerships with government agencies, funders, non-profits and private sector to deliver affordable and diverse housing options across the housing income continuum.

Mukhtar was the Chief Housing Officer for the City of Vancouver in Canada setting up the Vancouver Affordable Housing Agency to build 2,500 affordable homes on city and partner owned land. He was also responsible for understanding supply and demand across the housing market, for different communities including indigenous communities, and developing new strategies to implement in order to meet growing housing need.

Having set up Pomegranate Housing Consultancy, Mukhtar combines both strategic vision and practical policy implementation in developing affordable housing policies, products and programs including modular housing, resettlement projects and community plans for federal, provincial and municipal governments, non-profits and the private sector.

Susan Chapelle:
Squamish City Councillor, MBA

Susan is a serial entrepreneur, and has founded businesses for over 30 years. Susan is the owner of Squamish Integrated Health, and the co-founder of Aligned Collective, a community economic development hub that is helping build local business capacity. She is serving a second term as a Councillor for the District of Squamish. Susan is a published researcher, and holds an MBA and a certificate in community economic development from Simon Fraser University. Her numerous publications and expertise on the subjects of cities, health and technology have offered her the opportunity to speak globally, including India, Germany and the United States. As a researcher, Susan has published extensively, including recent work funded by the National Institute of Medical Science grant and published in PLOS One.

Susan’s recent opening of Aligned Collective in Squamish as a space where people can work together across sectors to resolve economic and social issues, as well as move into smart city solutions is an exciting use of her Community Economic Development education from SFU.

Facilitated By:
Negar Elmieh, Professor at Quest University

Negar is an educator, facilitator, researcher, and an advocate for health and environmental issues. She examines problems through an interdisciplinary lens, using both quantitative and qualitative methods to understand complex health, environment, educational, and policy issues. She is motivated by the need to understand systems to create more effective program and policies, to achieve social change, and to bridge the gap between research, communication, and real-world issues. Negar is a Professor at Quest University Canada, she holds a Master of Public Health and a Master of Science from Tufts University in Boston, and a PhD from the University of British Columbia.
