#SFUDataCafe

February 3, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

$5

In the footsteps of the success of SFU’s long-running Philosopher’s Café series, the City Program presents the Data Café.

The Data Cafe will be moderated by Andy Yan, a data guru himself and acting director of the SFU City Program. To prime the conversation, we’ll start with a few data professionals from the city and region. From there, attendees will be encouraged to share their data work about the City of Vancouver and region, techniques, and lessons learned. While tales of triumphs are appreciated, stories of ongoing data and visualizations challenges are encouraged where the audience can pitch technical advice or words of encouragement. If attendees wish to present, bring your laptop. Presentations should be less than 7 minutes.
There will be time for networking afterwards.

Speakers:
“Visualizing the Upcoming BC election”
Frank Hangler, Plot+Scatter

“Fire Traps, Rat Traps and Complete Communities: Triangulating Quantitative and Qualitative Neighbourhood Data”
Craig E. Jones, MA, UBC
“MLA Voting Records App”
Melody Ma, Imagine X
“When the Data Isn’t Open: How to file Freedom of Information requests for data (and get data out of PDFs)”
Chad Skelton, Kwantlen Polytechnic University
“Real estate portfolio strategy: understanding market risk through Sortino ratios”
Anthio Yuen, GWL Realty Advisors
Andy Yan, Director of the SFU City Program
More TBA!
