Opening Reception | An-My Le

November 12, 2015 @ 6:30 pm

Thursday, Nov 12, 2015 – 12:00 AM – Sunday, Jan 10, 2016 – 12:00 AM

In 2015 An-My Lê visited Emily Carr University as the 2015 Spring Distinguished Audain Artist-in-Residence. We welcome her back to the Charles H. Scott Gallery for a solo exhibition.

OPENING: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 7:30PM

GALLERY TALK: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 6:30PM

Lê was born in Saigon and moved to the United States at fifteen as a political refugee. She received her Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Science degrees in biology at Stanford University with plans to attend medical school and become a doctor. Lê has said that she became an artist by chance. While in graduate school, she stumbled across a photography course and quickly developed a passion for the photographic process. Although she was accepted to medical school, she decided to pursue a career in photography instead and went on to complete a Masters of Fine Art in photography at Yale University.

Lê’s work explores the American military. She presents photography of landscapes transformed by war or other military activities, blurring the boundaries between Hollywood portrayals and photojournalistic documentation. Much of her work is inspired by her own experience of war and dislocation.

Lê identifies as a landscape photographer. For Lê, landscape offers context to complex human experiences and narratives of war. Her work begins a dialogue between a personal, emotional history and a larger commentary of the history of violence and its cultural representation.

An-My Lê has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions at the Baltimore Museum of Art; Museum annde Stroom, Antwerp; Dia:Beacon, New York; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and MoMA PS1, New York. Lê is the recipient of numerous awards including fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation. She is a Professor of Photography at Bard College. Lê is represented by Murray Guy Gallery in New York.
