Blood Love Trouble is a group show from the Malaspina Printmakers Society, curated by Gabi Dao. It will feature three emerging Vancouver artists, Julia Dahee Hong, Casey Wei, and Katrina Niebergal, in dialogue with a selection of prints from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection and the Malaspina Consignment Collection.
Drawing from the historical trajectory in Akira Kurosawa’s film Ran (乱) and the woodblock print by Meiji period master Taiso Yoshitoshi’s Promenading (Society Wife), from the series 32 Aspects of Living (1888), the curatorial premise for this exhibition invites responses to the violence of property ownership, opening trade channels, and then consequently the cultivation of theatre, music and visual art inherent to this time period.
