Landscape design and management: exploring the intersection

The primary purpose of Landscape Design is the creation of an experience of landscape. But landscapes have other functions as well; they provide fresh air, flood control, recreational opportunities and much more. Landscapes are dynamic, often changing in unanticipated ways, finding unintended uses. Traditionally, landscape management has directed the trajectory of the landscape to maintain the planned experience and functions. We are entering an era in which both designers and managers find synergies in embracing the dynamic processes of landscape; they are engaged in a mutualism, in which each partner benefits from the activity of the other. Unfortunately, this beneficial interdependence often goes unrealized and would-be allies can behave as adversaries. This symposium will explore and celebrate the relationship between landscape design and management with a focus on gardens, parks, and academic landscapes.

Christy Ten Eyck

Since founding Ten Eyck Landscape Architects (TELA) in 1997, Christy Ten Eyck has connected urban dwellers with nature and each other. Based in Austin, Texas, TELA synthesizes architecture and landscape, creating engaging and restorative outdoor environments that infuse the city with natural beauty, provide ecosystem services, encourage social interaction and foster human wellbeing.

TELA is recognized as a leader in the creation of sustainable multifunctional landscapes for which it has received LEED Platinum and Gold awards and ASLA National Honor Awards for academic campus designs in desert landscapes: The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University (2009), The University of Arizona Sonoran Landscape Laboratory (2010) and The Arizona State University Polytechnic Campus (2012). More recently, firm’s University of Texas at El Paso, Campus Transformation Project earned the 2016 Society of College and University Planning Excellence in Landscape Architecture Honor Award and the first Sustainable SITES Initiative Silver Certification.

The discussion panel will be moderated by Dr. Patrick Mooney, Ph.D., FCSLA, FCELA, ASLA.
