Inside and Outside the Frame: Understanding Paintings in their Historical Context

October 3, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Of Heaven and Earth: 500 Years of Italian Painting from Glasgow Museums
Lecture / Inside and Outside the Frame:
Understanding Paintings in their Historical Context
/

Francesco Freddolini, Luther College, University of Regina

in the Gallery, 1st Floor, Annex Workshop, Annex Bldg

Many Renaissance and Baroque paintings have experienced a variety of lives. Although we now admire them in museums, these objects originally existed in ecclesiastical, public or domestic contexts. For example, paintings could function as tools for prayer above altars or as celebratory images displayed in aristocratic palaces. By looking outside the frame—at the context that surrounded the paintings—this talk explores historical patterns of display, casts light on how viewers interacted with artworks and suggests how such images communicated meaning in their original social contexts.
