The word “boreas” is Latin for north, and “boreal” pertains to the north. For me the word connotes light, waterways, trees and rain. These are the themes of this exhibition of new paintings.
The images in this show are not so much about specific places in the north but rather about my identification with the area in which I grew up. In making them I bridge and attempt to connect inner and outer landscapes. Both are constantly in flux. I paint quickly, but often have to rework the canvas. It is important that the final images reflect the fleeting aspects of those landscapes. My memory, guided by my emotions, plays a big part in guiding the process. Time speeds up and simultaneously slows down. I’m looking for simplification and focus in the chaos. As a friend of mine once said, “Look for areas where the viewer’s eye can rest.”
