BCSLA Learn the Basics of Urban Planning

Delivered by practicing professional planner Eric Aderneck, RPP, MPL, BCOM, DULE, who teaches urban planning courses at Langara College, Simon Fraser University, and the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley Real Estate Boards, receive an expert introduction to urban planning and how it contributes to building sustainable and vibrant communities.

In this class you will learn what urban planning is (aka city planning, land use planning, community planning), why we plan, types of plans, define land uses and calculate densities, and how plans are prepared and implemented. Additionally, the roles of planners, stakeholders, and decision-makers in planning and development processes.

We’ll explain planning concepts, principles, terms, and current issues, and how municipal plans and policies interconnectedly influence real estate development, transportation systems, and other urban matters, with local Vancouver examples. We will consider planning at different scales, at the site, neighbourhood, city, and regional levels, and review the application of land use tools, such as: plans, policies, bylaws, zoning, subdivision, and other approvals.
