Symmetry Event: The Impacts of Lighting in Learning Environments

March 15, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Lighting is no longer just a visual tool, it affects behaviour, mood and circadian rhythms. Since the time of the one room schoolhouse being designed for the greatest use of daylight entering over a student’s left shoulder, we have been considering the best lighting conditions for learning environments. School architecture and design has gone through many phases since then but it is only now that the pedagogy is also changing. The antiquated view of a teacher lecturing at students is being phased out and the new pedagogy theories are dictating how schools should be designed. In addition, light sources have evolved exponentially in the last 150 years and the research on the impacts of that is struggling to keep up. We don’t yet have definitive answers but by understanding where the research is heading, we can design a learning environment that is adaptable to future needs.
