CCW – BUILDING IN THE CITY OF VANCOUVER – EVOLVING ENERGY TARGETS PANEL

Vancouver has committed to shifting to 100% renewable energy before 2050, the first Canadian city to set that goal.  The city has also targeted reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% below 2007 levels before 2050. This ambitious 35 year plan focuses on renewable buildings, renewable transportation and green economic investment opportunities. How do we in the construction industry make this happen? What energy goals will directly affect the construction industry? What is the intent behind these goals?

Our panelists include;

Martina Soderlund, Sr. Building Energy Analyst, AME Group

Martina Soderlund is a Sr Building Energy Analyst with the AME Group in Vancouver. In her role Martina is responsible for advising on sustainability goals and targets, building energy performance, daylight distribution, natural ventilation strategies, greenhouse gas reductions and renewable energy strategies. Martina is an approved Building Energy Performance Modeler by ASHRAE, certified third party reviewer by CaGBC on their list for Experienced Modeler’s, trained Passive House Professional and has worked with training for consultants in North-America and Europe and advocating building energy performance for the industry around BC.

Patrick Enright, Green Building Engineer, City of Vancouver

Patrick Enright is the Green Building Engineer with the City of Vancouver’s Sustainability Group, where he works on green building policy for large new buildings. Current priorities include the implementation of the Zero Emissions Building Plan, with the first step being the recent update of the Green Building Policy for Rezonings. Patrick is a professional engineer with years of experience in the building industry, including a number of years in Vancouver with a mechanical engineering firm in design and energy modeling. Prior to moving to Vancouver, Patrick worked in the national project management office of Defence Construction Canada located in Ottawa.

Sydney Schwartz, Project Architect, MCM Partnership

Sydney Schwartz received her doctorate of architecture from the University of Hawaii. She is a Project Architect at MCM Partnership. Sydney is a recent transplant from Alberta, where she worked with other architects and consultants to navigate the industry’s growing pains from the newly implemented NECB. Sydney’s favourite high-performing project was a 92 sq.ft. tiny house which functioned reliably with one solar panel and a marine heater.

Moderator: Marie-France Venneri, Associate, AME Group

Marie joined AME Group in 2010. She began her career as an engineering sales representative; a role that provided the opportunity to meet with property owners, technical consultants, and contractors to determine their equipment needs. In 2015 Marie took a year off to travel, and returned to AME after her adventures and was promoted to the role of Associate within the company in 2017.

In her role at AME, Marie successfully assists clients in advancing their projects towards clearly defined goals. During all phases of the project, Marie ensures that she monitors and communicates the project progress with all key stakeholders. Her goal for every project is to surpass the client’s expectations by providing innovative and energy efficient mechanical designs. In addition to her commitment to quality design, Marie’s enthusiasm and outgoing nature add to the positive environment at AME.

Marie is the president of Canadian Construction Women (CCW), which provides members with opportunities for support, mentoring, networking, community involvement, learning and development. CCW acts as a resource about construction and exists to attract and retain women in the industry.
